Albany - Alan Sanford Lobel, 78, passed away peacefully at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center on Wednesday, May 14th. Alan was a man of humor, kindness, and dedication to the community, and he will be missed.

Born in Schenectady, New York, Alan was the first son of Reva and David Lobel. Alan attended School #23, Albany High School, and received his undergraduate and Masters degrees from the University of Rochester. He was a member of the Phi Epsilon Pi fraternity, where he made many lifelong friends. While working on his MBA at night, Alan was a Special Education teacher, where he was loved by students and faculty alike. It was while teaching that he met his wife, Karen, also a Special Education teacher. Alan and Karen were married in 1972.

After their wedding, Alan returned to Albany where he and his father started Lobel Food Brokers. They worked together for 13 years, until his father's passing. Alan continued to build the business, which provided all kinds of food to restaurants, hospitals, and schools. Lobel Food Brokers was eventually located across New York State with more than 30 employees. His employees were like family to Alan, and he was always grateful to them for their hard work and devotion to the company. Alan also had wonderful relationships with his customers and the business owners he represented - he continued those friendships long after he retired.

Alan loved sports. He played basketball in high school and college and followed all sports regularly. When his children were little, he coached baseball, basketball, and soccer. His greatest love, however, was golf and he could never play it enough. He enjoyed golfing days with friends, as well as competing in many charity golf events.

During his retirement years, he had a mantra: "How can I help?" He became a volunteer extraordinaire. Alan sat on a number of Boards throughout the Capital District and volunteered his time for the Red Cross, Regional Food Bank, Ronald McDonald House, Grassroot Givers, Chabad, A Village, Food Pantries of the Capital District, and Park Playhouse. He was recognized as a finalist for the Jefferson Award, an award begun by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to recognize outstanding volunteers in public service, both locally and nationally. It was a very special recognition for him.

Although he was always a teaser, he was a gentle, kind soul who would do anything for anyone. He was a devoted husband, father, and friend, and he will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his devoted wife Karen, his children Scott (Lauren), Deborah (Nim), and Brian; his grandchildren, Natalie, Gregory, Rami, Matan and Dina; his brother Ira and sister-in-law Sheila, as well as nieces Melissa Rose (Michael) and Rebecca Bentov (Noam) and their families.

Services will be at Temple Israel, 600 New Scotland Avenue, at 10:00 am on Friday, May 16th. Burial will follow at Temple Israel Cemetery. The traditional period of mourning (shiva) will be held at Alan and Karen's home in Delmar, NY with a Minyan to be held each evening at 7:30 pm

Contributions in Alan's memory may be made to the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center, Temple Israel, or a charity of one's choice.
